The best beard wax should feature a non-greasy formula, should have a mild fragrance, and will allow you to easily style and restyle your hair. It should also be easy to remove and should boost both your beard and skin health.

Since beards are in these days, there’s no shortage of beard care products on the market. This can make it difficult to choose a product that actually works, and one that offers that type of pleasant, mild scent that won’t overwhelm you or anyone who comes near you. Since there are a variety of beard care products to choose from, finding the right one can be a challenge. Not all waxes are created equal, which can make it a matter of trial and error until you find a product that works for you, your grooming needs, and even your beard type. I’ve tried several products on the market and narrowed it down to the top seven waxes that work, won’t leave your beard looking greasy, and will make restyling your beard a cinch.

I’ve also created a buyer’s guide, which will go over the features to look for, how to choose a wax that’s perfect for your beard length, grooming needs, and scent preference, and how to avoid a wax with a greasy formula.

Below, you’ll find a comparison chart that lists each of the waxes I’ve reviewed, how they rated, their active ingredient, and other important information that will make it much easier for you to choose a winner.

Buyer’s Guide

Choosing a beard styling product can involve buying and trying out different types of products such as creams and waxes, or a variety of the same type of products, in search of one that doesn’t smell overwhelming and will work with your facial hair type, texture, and length. If you don’t know what to look for, you can quickly end up with a medicine cabinet that’s full of useless bread care products, which is basically just throwing money away.

This guide will discuss what to look for in a wax, what to avoid, and how to find the right product for you.

The best beard wax will keep your beard looking and smelling great, add some much-needed shine, hydrate your skin and generally boost skin and beard health. Often, finding the right wax can be a matter of personal preference and can even depend on the type of look you’re going for.

A little wax can go a long way, however, the wax you choose should offer a non-greasy formula, be easy to apply, and should make styling your beard easy and keep it looking good throughout the day.

However, considering how popular beards are these days, there’s no shortage of beard care products to choose from, ranging from balms and creams to oils and wax. Wax is a great option because you can reactivate it to fix flyaway hairs, so it doesn’t need to be applied more than once a day.

How it Holds Up

In terms of features, hold is pretty important, especially considering it’s the whole point of using wax. If a wax holds strong, it will prevent your beard from looking wild, frizzy, and unkempt. The goal of using wax is to tame your beard, giving you a well-groomed, manicured look. However, not every wax is created equal, which means you’ll come across many products that simply don’t work and instead of keeping your beard looking groomed and shaped, it will give it a greasy appearance.

Fragrance

With so many products to choose from, finding a wax that smells appealing should be simple enough. Unfortunately, there are way too many products on the market that have an overpowering smell which can get old fast. Since the wax is in your beard, you’ll constantly smell it. Because of this, you’ll want to choose a product that has a mild fragrance, one that won’t be overwhelming and one you won’t mind smelling all day long.

What Ingredients to Avoid

You’ll want to look for a wax that’s not petroleum jelly based. These formulas tend to be greasy, which turns into a big mess fast, especially if you need to restyle your beard later in the day. Aside from getting everywhere, this type of wax will leave your beard looking greasy and unkempt. Additionally, washing out a wax that contains petroleum can be difficult and can even leave your beard looking dry after you’ve washed it several times to remove the product. Petroleum will also clog your pores, which can lead to ingrown hairs, blemishes, and rashes.

Ingredients to Look for

Look for a wax that contains all-natural ingredients. The fewer ingredients, the better. Try to avoid buying a wax that contains any chemicals or synthetic ingredients. Again, petroleum is one ingredient you’ll want to avoid. Most types of wax will have beeswax as the main ingredient. Beeswax is gentle on the skin and features a non-greasy formula, which will make it easier to wash out or restyle your beard. Products with beeswax can thicken your beard instantly, so if you’re just barely growing out a beard or your beard has grown in patchy, a beeswax-based product can solve your problem and instantly make your beard look healthier.

Styling

Styling your beard with wax is a more forgiving option than using beard oil. While beard oil is the go-too beard care product for some men, it’s too easy to use too much oil, which can leave your beard looking and feeling greasy. Additionally, restyling your beard if you use beard oil can be difficult, since it doesn’t actually hold your beard in place and simply works to keep the beard soft and somewhat tamed.

But like beard oil, a little wax will go a long way.

Before you apply the wax, you’ll want to first wash your beard and dry it. Make sure you use a hydrating beard facial wash that’s specifically designed for facial hair. Conditioning your beard at this time will also be important since a dry beard can result in flaky skin and a beard that has a rough texture that makes it hard to tame. If you don’t currently use a specially formulated shampoo and/or conditioner, check out my guide on beard softening products.

Once your beard is washed and conditioned it, dry it using a blow dryer set on cold. Applying the wax to a dry beard is important since most products will lose some of their effectiveness if applied to wet hair.

Grab a small amount of wax and rub your hands together, evenly coating your palms with the product. First, apply the wax on one side of your face and gently stroke your beard until it feels smooth. You’ll do the same thing for the other side of your face.

Next, you can use a comb to evenly coat your beard with the product. Combing out your beard will also allow you to easily shape a long beard, sculpt a shorter beard, remove any loose hair, get rid of any remaining trapped debris, and allow you to achieve a well-groomed look. Now, you’ll grab a towel and carefully remove any excess wax. If you’ve used a small amount of wax, there shouldn’t be much to remove, but if you’ve gone a little overboard, then this is a great trick to remove some of the product and prevent the wax from weighing down your beard or from giving it a greasy appearance. Brush or comb your beard again, and you’re all set.

Restyling

Many men love using wax because it’s a product that can easily be reactivated by just combing the beard again. If you don’t have a comb or brush handy, even just running your fingers through your beard will reactive the wax, which will instantly tame any stray hairs, for a smooth look.

How to Remove Wax

Whether you’ve used too much, or you’ve used a product that’s really strong and difficult to wash out, you can easily remove the wax using warm soapy water. Some beard wearers recommend using a tear-free baby wash to get the wax out quickly. Others will stick with their beard specific shampoos. With wax, you don’t have to wash it out daily. Doing so can actually dry out your skin. Instead, leave it in for a few days and wash it out in the shower using your beard care shampoo and conditioner.

Final Thoughts

This guide and my product recommendations is designed to help you find the best beard wax, a product that you can use daily to help keep your beard looking and smelling great. Remember, the wax you choose should have a non-greasy formula, should be easy to use and apply, and should make styling and restyling your beard much easier. Of course, the fragrance is also important, so when you’re checking out each product, if you’re ordering online, make sure you pay close attention to the ingredients or read reviews on the product to learn more about its scent. I hope I’ve helped to guide you in the right direction, so you can find the perfect wax that can keep your beard in check, while also boosting skin and beard health.
